Wicken Fen

A tiny but navigable lode runs right through this National Trust fenland.

Wicken Lode is well hidden and not well advertised. If your vessl is 60' or shorter, you can pass through Reach Lode lock (Upware) and navigate a short way along Reach Lode. You turn left under a wooden footbridge into Wicken Lode. Although the Lode is only about a mile long, progress is very slow because it is so narrow. It takes about an hour. Eventually you arrive at a low footbridge that bars your way. If you are a member of GOBA you can use their designated mooring, otherwise you must moor slightly downstream. There is room to turn any boat that can fit through the lock.

Take care at the Lock. It switches to automatic after a while and the guillotine gates change to allow it to operate as an automatic sluice. Don't get caught by it!
